JT is the QB for OSU

jt-barrett-ohio-state-triAfter emerging as the starting quarterback to begin the 2014 season, Barrett came into 2015 taking a back seat to the shadow of Cardale Jones’ spectacular playoff run.

Surprisingly enough, all throughout preseason practice and the first weeks of the college football season, Urban Meyer consistently reiterated that Barrett had been unable to set himself apart from Cardale, despite Jones’ less than stellar performances on the field.

The surprising part? We had all seen Barrett’s abilities on full display throughout 2014, until an ankle injury suffered against Michigan sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Jones took full advantage of the opportunity, leading the Buckeyes to the National Championship.

Through his eleven and a half games of 2014, JT set multiple team and conference records and even finished 5th in the Heisman Trophy race. His 45 total touchdowns were something never before seen in Columbus and as a redshirt freshman, the future was all but set.

Things changed from last season, but now with Jones struggling, the coaching staff has seen the writing on the wall and decided to make the change, giving Barrett his opportunity to run the offense once again. On Wednesday, Urban Meyer addressed the media, stating, ‘JT has earned the right to start Saturday at Rutgers’.

Barrett_passing_RutgersThe fans have seen it from day one, JT presents a unique set of skills that Jones does not possess, but the men in positions of power wanted to make sure Jones was given a fair shake.

Now, it’s back to Barrett with Jones’ morale certainly shot. He was given ample time to work through his issues and reaffirm his role on the team, but simply, did not produce adequately or efficiently enough to warrant the starting job. And Saturday night, against Penn State, was the real eye opener.

Cardale missed wide open targets and failed to avoid pressure in the pocket. JT began the game shining in red zone situations and Urban rewarded him with extended minutes. He did not disappoint either, completing all four of his pass attempts and even breaking the 100-yard rushing barrier with Ezekiel Elliot.

If you cannot see the difference in the offense with Barrett in charge, I am not sure what to tell you. The offensive line seems more comfortable with him and the read-option (a staple of an Urban Meyer offense) is simply lifeless with Cardale under center. The buzz coming from the stands, too, is quite obvious and Urban hears all of it.Barrett&Miller

With two elite threats to run the ball on any given play, the offense will get clicking. Barrett flashed the offense of old this past Saturday and truly appears to be back in his pre-injury groove. However, as Urban Meyer explained, the situation is ‘very delicate’ and wants to make sure he addresses it in the correct manner.

The decision has been made, so here’s to hoping Barrett seizes the opportunity and runs with it, otherwise, the damage to the psyche of both quarterbacks could be catastrophic.
