Bear Down: Bears fall to Lions in OT, look to get healthy over bye week

Sadly, there will be no signing Bear Down this week.

The Chicago Bears fell to the Detroit Lions, who were winless heading into the contest, 38-34 in OT at Ford Field Sunday.

Despite the valiant efforts of Jay Cutler, the Bears secondary fell apart leading to a game winning field goal by Matt Prater.  Cutler lead the offense down the field once again at the end of the fourth quarter and led to a FG by Robbie Gold to force OT.

That is three straight games for Jay when he puts the team on his back.

alshon-jeffery-catchAlshon Jeffery was back on Sunday and exploded for a huge game.   He has eight catches for 147 yards and one touchdown.  Phenomenal play from a guy who had been out since week 1.

When I watched this game, it was for sure an entertaining game but if I were a coach, I would be mad for sure.  Both teams had too many penalties that changed field position.

A big shock after I looked over the box score was the lack of productivity from Matt Forte.  He only averaged 2.9 yards a carry  and was absent in the passing game which is unlike him.

Looking at the Bears defense, the Bears secondary is a real issue and its hard to watch.  From blown coverages to bad technique, opposing QBs are having huge days.  The Bears still lack some talent on that defense but the simple things need to be fixed.

Quick D Stats: Christian Jones: 9 tacklesNFL: Preseason-Miami Dolphins at Chicago Bears

Pernell McPhee: 4 tackles and 2 TFL

Quick O stats: Jay Cutler: 26/41 353 yards 1 TD, 1 INT
Matt Forte: 24 carries for 69 yards 1 TD
Alshon Jeffery: 8 rec for 147 yards 1 TD

Quick look at the Lions
I came into this game saying the Bears will handle them and go into the bye week at .500.  Well, I guessed wrong.

Matthew Stafford had a great showing passing for 405 yards and 4 touchdowns.  166 of those yards were to Calvin Johnson who looked like his old self again.

The Lions run game has failed to get off the ground so far this season.  Ameer Abdullah had only 48 yards on 14 carries.  Theo Riddick had 28 yards on 7 carries.

The Lions have some studs on defense.  They kept the run game and Alshon jeffery in check which is very hard to do.  Tulloch had 13 tackles and Ryan Mathis played well all game and was rewarded with an INT.

kevin-white-nfl-2015-nfl-draftAs the Bears go into the bye week, there is huge news coming out of Chicago.  First round pick Kevin White has been activated from the PUP list and is eligible to start practicing with the team this week.

White started doing light running last week but is still far from appearing in his first NFL game, per sources.  With Jeffery and Eddie Royal being on the injury report all season, this is definitely  good news that we may see Kevin White soon.

2-4 heading into their bye week, the Bears have a lot to fix.  Getting healthy will be the first priority but getting back to the basics may not be a bad idea.  The Bears can still compete for a Wild Card spot especially with the way Cutler is leading the offense.  Willie Young, Lamaar Houston have really stepped up and showing what this defense can become. It’s time to regroup and be ready to play the division rival Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field on November first.

Go Bears!
