Defender Joe Gomez and striker Danny Ings face being sidelined for the rest of the season after both suffered anterior cruciate ligament injuries within two days of each other.

18 year-old Gomez sustained his injury playing in England Under-21s’ victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday while Ings piked up an identical injury during a training session with the Reds on Wednesday.

Ings, 23, has scored three goals in seven games for the Merseysiders since joining from Burnley in the summer, and made his England debut against Lithuania on Monday.

gomezGomez, who also moved to Anfield this summer, has made five starts in the Premier League so far this season.

Klopp, who was only appointed as Liverpool manager last week following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, said of the young full-back: “What a wonderful young boy: tall, muscles in the right positions, but he has an injured knee – an ACL.

“It was not the best day in his life but he is a young guy and I am pretty good at waiting for players, young players especially.

“This is his home and we will do everything to help him come back as soon as possible.”

Klopp’s first game in charge is against Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.
