Derrick Rose… or Falls Again
- Updated: September 30, 2015

Bad news for the Chicago Bulls and Derrick Rose once again. Derrick Rose suffered a left orbital fracture during Tuesday’s practice and will undergo surgery Wednesday, the team announced. A timetable for his return will not be known until after he has surgery. Rose sustained the injury when he took an elbow to the face and he left practice early. Coach Fred Hoiberg described it as “a good, hard elbow,” before the extent of Rose’s injury was
known and said Rose “looked great when he was out there.”
This is the latest injury setback for Derrick Rose since his 2010-2011 MVP season. He signed a five-year max extension worth close to $95 million before the 2011-2012 season but has played in only 100 regular-season games since then because of many injuries, including three serious knee injuries. Rose missed 27 games in the 2011-2012 season with a sprained toe, strained back, strained groin, ankle, and foot injuries before missing the entire 2012-2013 season with a torn ACL. He then missed 71 games out of 82 in the 2013-2014 season after tearing the meniscus cartilage in his knee, an injury that reoccurred in February and caused him to miss 20 games. He had been sidelined for eight games near the start of last season with ankle and hamstring issues.
During media day, Rose said that despite his ongoing health problems, he still believes he is one of the best players in the game. “I can’t get caught up into that,” Rose said, referring to talk about his game. “I know I’m great. It’s a lot of people that don’t know I’m great, that’s the thing. But it’s cool. I know I can hoop. You can put me anywhere, and I know how to play the game of basketball.”
This begs the question, are some athletes just snake-bit? My answer is yes. Just look at Derrick’s history with injuries. He cannot catch a break, just when Bulls fans were looking forward to a healthy team. Their first practice of training camp under new coach Fred Hoiberg and Derrick Rose is already injured. The good news is that it isn’t a knee injury, but my guess is that he won’t be ready for opening night when Chicago takes on Cleveland October 27th.
