Rodney’s Role

The Cubs made another move the other day to add to their bullpen. Fernando Rodney was traded to the Cubs for a player to be named and cash.Rodney2cubs

Rodney, 38, was designated for assignment by Seattle earlier this week. He pitched to a 5.68 ERA (66 ERA+) with a 1.50 WHIP in 50 2/3 innings for the Mariners this year. Rodney blew six saves in 22 chances and also suffered five losses. He lost the closer’s job to Carson Smith a few weeks ago.

The Cubs hope that they do not have a repeat of Rafael Soriano’s bad showings. Rodney played while Maddon was in Tampa. The two were together with the Rays from 2012-13, when Rodney saved 85 games with a 1.91 ERA (202 ERA+) in 141 1/3 innings.

Just last year, Rodney had a 2.85 ERA (128 ERA+) and led baseball with 48 saves.

Despite a shaky season, Rodney’s stuffy is still pretty good. His sinkers and change ups are nasty stuff, with above average velocities. His ground ball rate is exceptionally high as well, which is always good.

As September 1st nears, the roster will be expanding and teams can call up as many arms as they want. Rodney should not be taking anyone’s spot but he can for sure be available.

Rodney’s role as he joins the Cubs: show he’s still got it.

Fernando+Rodney+Joe+Maddon+GY6wAKy7p8amHe must put his awful play behind him and start a new. Maddon is giving him a chance to be on a winning team and contribute. Rodney has the pitches and the experience, he now just has to execute despite being 38. His chances may be limited and he has to take advantage.

I actually wanted Rodney when the season started. A high velocity guy that could be a great add to the pen. When I saw the news, I was pumped. The bullpen now looks like: Travis Wood, Justin Grimm, Zac Rosscup, James Russell, Pedro Strop, Tommy Hunter, Jason Motte, Fernando Rodney, and Hector Rondon. Scary right? While others will probably be added, the bullpen is the back-bone of this team. Maddon must get the match ups right and these guys have to execute.

The offense is rolling, this team is rolling. A low risk move by the Cubs gets them even more ready for October. The Cubs are comfortably five games ahead of the SF Giants for the 2nd WC spot. It’s time to finish the year strong, and Rodney can really help us do that.
