Jets Add Insurance With Flynn
- Updated: August 20, 2015

Matt Flynn has made his rounds in the NFL. After being drafted in the seventh round by the Green Bay Packers, he has signed with five teams (Seahawks, Raiders, Bills, Packers again, Patriots, Jets) while accumulating 18 million dollars with only 7 starts. Matt Flynn was picked up in June by the Patriots to be a solid backup for Jimmy Garoppolo as Tom Brady would likely face suspension. Flynn pulled a hamstring in camp landing him on the PUP list. He was later released for Ryan Lindley. Next stop, the New York Jets.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has been named the starter since Geno Smith suffered a broken jaw in a locker room altercation. Flynn, 30, signed a one year deal to backup Fitzpatrick. Flynn is also dealing with a hamstring injury that will keep him sidelined at least one more week. Flynn should be able to master the playbook in order to see some preseason play.
Flynn made this statement Wednesday: ”Yeah, sometimes I have to look at the map app on the phone to figure it out,” Flynn joked after being signed. It’s good to have some characters on the team.
This signing comes off that the Jets are desperate. Bryce Petty was drafted in the fourth round in this year’s draft. They obviously wanted some veteran insurance until Smith is healthy Fitzpatrick.
Matt Flynn will always be known for his six touchdown game back on January 1st, 2012. Flynn went 31/44 with 480 yards and six touchdowns with three going to Jordy Nelson. This miraculous game led Flynn to cash in that offseason. Flynn signed to a three-year, 26 million dollar deal. Russell Wilson earned the starting job making Flynn’s contract expendable. Flynn later was traded to Oakland and lost the job to Terrell Pryor in the preseason.
Flynn then went to Buffalo, back to Green Bay, New England and now New York. Flynn has talent and is a solid backup anywhere he goes. Ryan Fitzpatrick has not put up the best numbers in his career. If he struggles, Flynn knowing the playbook could very well see action before Geno Smith returns. It’s important for Flynn to learn the playbook and get healthy if he wants to keep his NFL career going.
