Johnson signs with Arizona
- Updated: August 18, 2015

Chris Johnson met with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Within the last 48 hours he passed his physical and reportedly signed with the Cardinals for a rumored approximate $2M 1 year deal. He can make as much as $2 million with the Cardinals if he hits incentives tied to his rushing yards and making the Pro Bowl. The deal is for the veteran’s minimum of $870,000 without those escalators and has no signing bonus.
The Arizona Cardinals enter the second week of preseason with a complicated situation at running back. Andre Ellington is the current starter, but head coach Bruce Arians has been open about wanting more competition at the position. Consequently, they drafted running back David Johnson in the 3rd round of this years draft. He just returned to the practice field on Monday after nursing a hamstring injury. Ellington only started to practice with the team this past Thursday and was uncharacteristically caught from behind on a big pass play from Carson Palmer in the teams first pre-season game this past Saturday evening. He too had been slowed by a hamstring injury and with his limited performance in the afore mentioned game, may not be 100 %. Therefore, the Cardinals inquired, met with and signed Chris Johnson.
With this latest development, the Arizona Cardinals running back situation looks like this. Chris Johnson, who is now 29, is far removed from his days as a superstar Tennessee 2,000 yard back. Ellington, who has failed to seize the starting job with authority like Arians was hoping for, now has 2 starting backs who will share the load, as most teams are now leaning to, and a back-up option in David Johnson who will hopefully learn, gain limited experience, and be able to stay healthy to combine with Ellington next year.
Be warned, before you continue to scroll down, the picture he posted of his bullet is rather graphic.
Chris Johnson, is a prime example of what not to do with a running back as when he was with Tennessee they knew he was the best player on the field and they just kept running him until he inevitably broke down. Chris Johnson was also injured in a drive-by shooting this off-season.
This running back tandem is not good for your fantasy team, but it is good for the Cardinals football team. I am thinking Bruce Arians is only worried about what is best for the Cardinals, not your fantasy team.
