Shane Ray: The Dominate Force in Denver

I really love this draft class.  There are a lot of athletes that look ready to dominate the NFL.  From Winston to Phillip Dorsett, teams and fans are in for a real treat.  Upon leading up to the draft, there was one player that really caught my eye and I instantly became a fan.  That player is the fierce, fast, outstanding pass rusher Shane Ray.

Shane Ray, 22, was drafted twenty-third overall by the Denver Broncos.

Ray played for Missouri where he was an All-America, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and first team All-SEC.  He recorded 14.5 sacks last season which broke both Michael Sam’s and Aldon Smith’s record.

Shane Ray was one of the top defensive prospects in this year’s draft.  He was projected to go top 10 but an incident hurts his chances.  The week of the draft he was cited with possession of marijuana and a traffic violation in Missouri.  There was also news that surfaced that he may need surgery but he told ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen that teams have been informed he just needs to “take it easy through rookie camp and continue to focus on rehab and healing.”

Away from those distractions, Ray is going to make a huge impact in the NFL.  His pass rush abilities alone will take him to the next level.

When I watch tape on Shane, I see a fantastic football player.  He does everything right.  He squeezes down the linemen, he fights being reached, he uses his hands not his body when getting to the quarterback.  His hand use is ridiculous.  He knows what to do in a split second and that will come in handy versus pro bowl linemen.  This game vs South Carolina was one of Ray’s best games last year.  Watch his hand use.  It is truly something.

Don’t count out Ray when stopping the run too.  His speed allows his to pursuit flat down the line and make the tackle.  Last season, he set a career high for tackles and tackles for loss in his first five games.

Ray is also lucky to have talented veterans with him on that Denver defense.  Von Miller and Demarcus Ware headline that defense which Ray is going into.  In fact these two have already spoken highly of the rookie.  And they are doing something special with him.

“I told him the rookie stuff is out the window — I’m not going to treat you like a rookie,’’ Miller said. “DeMarcus? He’s not going to treat you like a rookie. Everybody else is different, but me and DeMarcus, we’re going to treat him like we’ve been playing with him for a couple years now. He’s going to do a lot of great stuff for us.’’

Shane Ray will for sure be fun to watch this season.  He will flourish in 3rd and long situations when it’s time to kill the quarterback.  The opportunity is here for this talented athlete, and I know he is going to take advantage of it.  When all is said and done, he has a really good chance to be Rookie of the Year.  As of right now, I would have no problem calling him my pre-season ROY pick.
