Is Seattle Smart or Stupid?

What is the deal with Seattle? They recently made Russell Wilson the 2nd highest paid per year quarterback to retain him, and now they have done the same thing with All-Pro middle linebacker Bobby Wagner.

If you are not a Seattle Seahawk fan, do you even know who Bobby Wagner is? NFL.com is reporting Wagner’s  four-year contract extension is worth $43 million, which would make Wagner the highest-paid middle linebacker in football. So, they back the Brinks truck to Wilson’s house, and then they reload the truck and drive it to Bobby Wagner’s new crib. Do they have to make these guys the highest paid players in order to retain them? Football is not like baseball, there is a yearly salary cap. There is only so much money they can spend each given year, and with 2 players who are either 1 or 2 in pay at their position, I assume they will quickly run out of money as they fill out their remaining roster.

Wagner was an All-Pro last season and finished second on the team with 104 tackles despite missing five games with a painful toe injury – and that was after having 140 and 119 the previous two years. Wagner has been Seattle’s starting middle linebacker since being selected in the second round of the 2012 draft. The stretch last season when Wagner was out may have reinforced his importance to the best defense in the NFL. When he returned in late November, the Seahawks became immovable again. They didn’t allow a fourth-quarter point from Week 12 through the end of the regular season. So, there defense is good, but it is outstanding with Wagner. I guess the going rate between a top 10 defense and a #1 defense is about $10.4 million per year.wagner1

”It’s important to be recognized as one of the best. It’s not up to me. I let the people who get paid to figure that out, figure that out,” Wagner said on the first day of training camp. ”My job is to go out there and make sure this defense is ran right and that’s the best defense. And it will be the best defense that you guys see on this field – again.”

”History shows that if you play well, you’re supposed to get paid,” Wagner said. ”That’s the viewpoint, and we’ll see if it holds up.”

I understand wanting to get paid, but at what team expense do you continue to pay individuals? Personally I am leaning more toward stupid than smart. What do you, our passionate readers think? Leave your comments below.
