NXT Review: The Road to Brooklyn

We are only three weeks away from NXT TakeOver:Brooklyn!

NXT TakeOver Brooklyn

To kickoff the night at Full Sail University, Enzo Amore and Big Cass, with Carmella, took on Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder.  While it seemed as though Enzo and Big Cass are on the rise, Dawson and Wilder, self proclaimed fighters, are looking to add some clout to their own names.  After a very physical match, a hot tag was made to bring in the fresh man, hitting Enzo with a fierce finisher, the Shatter Machine.  Dawson and Wilder have indeed arrived.

Winners: Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder via a Shatter Machine

A quick travel in time back to last week brings us to Jason Jordan and Chad Gable explaining why they are finally gelling as a team.  They’re no nonsense, they get the job done, and they are ready, willing, and Gable.

Later in the night, Dana Brooke would be taking on Charlotte, and a video package highlighted Brooke and her jealousy over Charlotte being featured in the TapOut commercial and rise up to the main roster.  This will be a match everyone looks forward to.

Back in the ring, Baron Corbin was featured in yet another squash match.  The series of matches that last less than a minute, that feature the strength and brutality of Corbin accomplish only one thing: they keep the idea that he’s doing nothing fresh in the minds of the fans.  Impressive?  Perhaps because his quick victories aren’t over any true competition.  Wake us up when he takes on a worthy opponent.

Winner: Baron Corbin via the End of Days

With NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn just around the corner, the NXT/WWE Universe is anxious to see how the card will be filled out, just like Tyler Breeze.  Backstage, he confronted William Regal about who his opponent would be.  Regal said that he “went to the ends of the earth” for Breeze and “to be careful for what you wish for.”  No answer was given, but it gives a lot of food for thought.

Next up in the ring, Chad Gable and Jason Jordan would take on  Elias Samson and Manny Garcia (Levis Venezuela Jr.) to show that their win last week was not a fluke, that they are indeed the right recipe for tag team success.  Like Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder, Jordan and Gable want to prove that they are top contenders in the tag team division.  Despite the fact that their working relationship took some time to develop, and as Corey Grave reminds us that you don’t have to be friends to be an effective team, it seems that the chemistry between these two will lead them to brighter futures, which ultimately could be the glimmer of NXT Tag Team gold.

Winners: Chad Gable and Jason Jordan via a Grand Amplitude

In yet another episode of fat shaming, Bull Dempsey shows us what it means to get Bull-Fit.

From the absurd to the epic, the next match up features two of NXT’s top female athletes, but before heading to the ring, Dana Brooke reminds the fans that the match tonight with Charlotte is one that Dana has been looking forward to, but Charlotte has been dreading.  Regardless of the number of butterflies in each other’s stomachs, this match will prove to be one for the ages.Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 8.31.35 AM

It’s clear that Dana feels that she must prove something to the NXT/WWE Universe because her issues with Charlotte stem in jealousy and accusations that Charlotte stole everything that she got from Dana.  Whether it be personal or professional issues between these two athletes, they would dish out their animosity in the ring.  Charlotte made quick work of Dana, proving once and for all why she deserved all the recognition she’s received over the last month and being featured in the TapOut commercial.  After a killer spear, Dana was hit with the Natural Selection.  Lights. Out.

Winner: Charlotte via a Natural Selection

Last week, William Regal commented on his confusion as to Kevin Owens’ motivation for hitting him during last week’s contract signing with Finn Balor, and no sooner after mentioning his name, Kevin Owens appeared to apologize, offering an excuse of flight-or-fight and adrenaline impairing his judgement.  After walking away, Regal confessed his desire to see Owens lose against Balor in Brooklyn.

Inside the ring, Owens would take on a jobber who apparently has already been released from NXT.  This would be easy work for Owens, and perhaps it was his frustration after losing the NXT title to Finn Balor or his current feud on the main roster with Cesaro, but after the match, Owens delivered a killer power bomb on the ring apron to this poor, no-name opponent.  In familiar style, Owens then mocked Balor by mimicking his trademark pose.

While it seems unlikely that a title-change would occur on an NXT event when the titles would be on the line in Brooklyn in three weeks, this match would be an opportunity for these two teams to feel one another out and push each other to their limits.

Many people believe that Blake and Murphy are unworthy of the tag team titles.  They won them by cheating, mostly through the help of Alexa Bliss.  Regardless of whether it happened tonight or in Brooklyn, the tag champs will need to prove themselves if they want to retain gold.

After gaining the upper hand, Simon Gotch and Aiden English setup Murphy for the Whirling Dervish, but were distracted on the outside by Alexa Bliss.  That’s all that it would take for the roll up, and the victory.

Winners: Black and Murphy via outside distraction and roll-up.

But this wouldn’t be the end of the story for Alexa Bliss.  After clearing the ring and applying the Whirling Dervish, Ms. Bliss was left alone in the ring with Gotch and English who circled her like sharks on a feeding frenzy.  In an attempt at being gentlemen, the Vaudevillians held the ropes open for Alexa Bliss who rewarded them with matching slaps to the face.  Full of sass and vinegar, Bliss left the ring still high on the stolen victory.

* Blake and Murphy retained the NXT Tag Team Titles over The Vaudevillians. Alexa Bliss smacked The Vaudevillians after the match when they circled her creepily.
