Monday Morning QB

derek-carr-nfl-preseason-seattle-seahawks-oakland-raiders4-850x560Derek Carr was drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. A decade before that, his brother David Carr was the number one overall pick by the Houston Texas back in 2002 and started all 16 games as a rookie. Like David, Derek started all 16 games for Oakland last season, but put up much better numbers in the process.

David, who spent five seasons a full-time starter before serving as a backup the rest of his career, said his brother has something he never possessed. “He understands the game more than I did, 9so his confidence level is just off the charts,” David said. “His leadership ability is kind of where I was never at early on in my career. He’s able to go out and get guys that are seven, eight years older than him to actually buy in to what he’s doing, and believe that he can play, and believe that he can go out and lead the team.”

David also thinks Derek has all the necessary tools as well. “He just has a natural ability to throw the ball, just effortlessly, and it’s not really difficult for him,” David said. “It literally is effortless for him to throw the football.” David said his brother has focused on improving his body this offseason, following a strict diet.

As a rookie, Derek threw for 3,270 yards and 21 touchdowns, and had just 12 interceptions. He now has a more diverse group of weapons surrounding him. Derek’s brother says the Raiders should be a much better team in 2015. “He’s worked so hard in the offseason, just getting his body where it needs to be,” David said. “I think they’re going to be ready to go when it comes August, and when they start going to these preseason games it’s going to be fun to watch.”
