FIFA announces date for next Presidential election

The next FIFA Presidential election will be held on February 26th 2016, football’s governing body confirmed today.

Sepp Blatter announced he would step down from the position in May, but will remain FIFA president until next year’s election. fifa

79 year-old Blatter made the decision to resign following the arrests of 18 FIFA officials on charges including bribery and corruption.

UEFA President Michel Platini is an early favourite to take over from Blatter, who has held the post since 1998.

Prince Ali of Jordan, who Blatter beat in the latest election in May before announcing his resignation, is also another candidate for the role.

Meanwhile, UK prankster Simon Brodkin – aka Lee Nelson – interrupted a FIFA news conference and threw a wad of banknotes at Swiss national Blatter.

The conference was held up while Brodkin was ejected by security.

Blatter addressed the gathered media immediately after the incident saying: “Ladies and Gentleman, we have to clean here first, otherwise I will not be able to speak to you.

“When we speak about football – this has nothing to do with football. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Not long after being removed from the conference, Brodkin took to Twitter under the account of another alter ego – Jason Bent – to post: “Excited to be at Fifa meeting Sepp Blatter to secure the #NorthKorea2026 World Cup.”

Meanwhile, former FIFA Vice-President Jeffrey Webb has pleaded not guilty to bribery charges in connection with the corruption scandal.

Webb, from the Cayman Islands, was extradited from Switzerland to the USA, where he was placed under house arrest on $10 million bail by a New York judge.
