Arrieta The Ace

Before the season started, the general consensus was that Jon Lester would be the ace of the Chicago Cubs pitching staff. However, that hasn’t been the case this season. Jake Arrieta has been the best pitcher on the Chicago Cubs.

In his second full season with the team, Arrieta is pitching the best he 041515_ArrietaAndLester_featever has in his six year career. Last season, he went 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA and a .99 WHIP. Arrieta leads the Cubs in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, quality starts, and lowest ERA. He is also near the top in the NL in pitching statistics. He is in the top ten in strikeouts, wins, WHIP, ERA, innings pitched, and opponent’s batting average.

On July 12th, Arrieta got the win against the White Sox, not only that, he snagged his 10th win this season and his first MLB home run.  With that win, the Cubs are seven games over .500 and in control of the second Wild Card in the National League. Arrieta is their top pitcher and he does nothing but give the team a chance to win every fifth day. Jake Arrieta will be in the spotlight to see if he can lead this young Cubs team in the second half to the postseason.

Jon Lester’s first half has been more up and down while Arrieta is more consistent.  Lester hasn’t come close to showing yet that he was worth the six-year, $155 million investment. The month of May and his last three starts suggest the potential he has. “He just might be coming into his own this season right now,” Maddon said. “He’s had a lot going on: new city, new league, a lot of adjustments to be made. Maybe he’s getting to the point now where he’s finally becoming more comfortable.” I’m hoping Lester can overcome this and help out the team in the second half. But for right now, Jake Arrieta is the ace.
