Red Sox at the deadline

As the MLB trade deadline looms, the Red Sox are in a precarious position. The Sox are 6.5 games out of first in the AL East and are in desperate need of pitching if they are serious about contending for a playoff berth.hamels

Their ace Clay Buchholz recently went down with an elbow injury likely resulting in rookie Brian Johnson gaining a spot in the rotation. So that leaves them with a couple of open spots in the rotation as Masterson, Kelly, and Porcello have been dismal. Despite the fact that the Red Sox are reportedly looking at young pitchers under team control, they’ll likely have to make at least one exception to plug some holes in the rotation. Enter Cole Hamels. Hamels has been linked to the Red Sox since the offseason and now would be the time to pry him away from Philadelphia. A package for such a player would likely be a lot and Boston would be hesitant to relinquish a top 100 prospect(among others) for a 31 year old, but perhaps philly(and boston) can kill two birds with one stone and send Jonathan Papelbon back to Boston. Manuel Margot and Brian Johnson could offer the Phillies’ farm system some depth, albeit Johnson is currently in the Majors. Although, it’s hard to imagine that both would be included in a trade.

Both are heading into their mid-thirties and have had a successful track record. The difference between them is that Haren is having a great year and is on the last year of his deal, and Shields is having an off year while under contract for several more seasons. If the Sox do look to add a young pitcher to the rotation they could try to swing a deal for sonny gray(which would take a monster deal to pry from Oakland) or one of the Mets’ quartet of young pitchers. Or perhaps Mariners’ pitcher Taijuan Walker. Yoan Moncada would almost have to be included in any deal for one of these pitchers.

The Red Sox also desperately need bullpen help. Brewers’ relief pitcher Will Smith is having a great year and is likely available, he’s also under team control. The Phillies’ have three relief pitchers that are having a great season in Papelbon, Giles, and Gomez which would help the Red Sox. Also, Athletics’ Clippard will likely be on the move come the deadline so he can be an option. Their offense has been fine as of late, although they can try to swing a trade for Adam Lind to fill the hole at 1B that Mike Napoli leaves.
