Monday Morning QB

The Philadelphia Eagles have Sam Bradford with his bum knee and Mark Sanchez with his interceptions. One of them will be the starting quarterback for the team this season. If Bradford can overcome the situation, we won’t see much of Sanchez in Philadelphia. But if Bradford gets hurt like the last two seasons, Sanchez will be the quarterback and responsible for leading the Eagles to the playoffs.

Can they make the playoffs with Sanchez as quarterback? Can he eliminate those game losing interceptions? He believes he can. “I think about five or six throws from last year – maybe a check-down here, maybe throwing it away there, taking a sack or not taking a sack,” Sanchez said. “And in those five to 10 plays, not only does that change your percentages, that will usa-today-8307178.0change a season. That puts you into the next level. That puts us into the postseason tournament. You get into that tournament, and your numbers will naturally be up. But that team success will happen first. Everything else kind of happens on its own.”

In 2014, he completed a career best 64.1% of his passes for 2,418 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He finished that season with a 88.4 quarterback rating. The only problems with those numbers are the interceptions, but he wasn’t as bad as he was with the New York Jets. He still had the costly interceptions, though. The running game should be effective this time with the addition of DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews. Sanchez plays his best when he throws the football less than 30 times a game like he was with the Jets. He impressed Chip Kelly and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur last year because he was coming off shoulder surgery in 2013. Now we’re in 2015 and he says his arm feels better and stronger. But his decision making and accuracy will be the key. Sanchez can eliminate those interceptions if he gets the support.
