NXT Review – Itami Returns, Balor vs Rhyno

Last night’s WWE NXT airing opened with another moving tribute to the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes.  Triple H spoke for the NXT roster when he acknowledged the impact that he’s had on all those he encountered, how Dusty gave everything he was to the business, and how “we lost family” when he passed on.  Triple H acknowledged how the NXT roster was Dusty’s kids, then the fans, “would have been his NXT family.”  #RIPDustyRhodes

Update from Hideo Itami

An unexpected appearance from an injured Hideo Itami brought the mood back, announcing that he would be out another three to four months, but would indeed be in Japan for the July 4th “The Beast in the East” live event. maxresdefaultItami made it very clear that he did not care who came out victorious in the Kevin Owens vs Finn Balor NXT championship match; he would be challenging the champion for his title.  This prompted current champion, Kevin Owens to emerge, taunting Itami and demanding an apology for accusing Owens of causing the injury to Itami’s left shoulder.  Itami responded to this by saying, “Kevin Owens.  You are a great champion, but you are a terrible human being.”  A seemingly defenseless Itami was targeted by Owens, but was thwarted when Finn Balor emerged, setting up Owens for on the entrance ramp.  Not to be outdone and reminiscent of three weeks ago, Rhyno appeared out of nowhere to put an end to Balor’s attempts on Owens and setting up the night’s main event match: Rhyno vs Finn Balor.

Jason Jordan & Sylvester Lefort against Enzo and Cass with/ Carmella.  The real highlight here was the promo that Enzo and Cass cut.  The duo made short work out of Jordan & Lefort.  Jason Jordan was able to get off a powerhouse tosses, but Lefort offered limited offense.  Enzo rollup out of nowhere on Jason Jordan; clean pin.

Winners: Enzo and Cass

Dana Brooke w/Emma vs Cassie

There’s no denying that Dana Brooke is a physical specimen worthy of the praise she’s received, yet most of the kudos comes directly from herself.  The self-proclaimed ultimate diva came out to “Let’s go Dana/Dana sucks” chants from the crowd.  Dana was able to put away Cassie with a slam/power bomb.

Winner: Dana Brooke

A Charlotte promo followed to alert Dana Brookes that Charlotte was coming after her.

Finn Balor docu-series Part II highlighted Balor’s time in New Japan Wrestling and his affinity for Legos during his downtime from wrestling.

Hype Brothers vs. Hawkins & Fulton

This match allowed for fans to get pumped up and live off the energy of Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder.  A clean pin for the Hype Brothers after a hot tag to Ryder resulting in a Browski Boot and assisted Rough Ryder off the top rope.

Winners: Hype Brothers

Backstage segment with William Regal and Eva Marie, in which Eva asked for an opportunity to show what talent she has on the NXT stage.  Regal said she would have to prove herself because the NXT Divas division is setting the world on fire.

Finn Balor vs Rhyno – Kevin Owens on Commentary

After Finn Balor’s chilling entrance, fans were shocked to hear Kevin Owen’s music hit.  Sending a clear message that he was preparing for the July 4th live event in Japan where he would be defending his title against Balor, Owens joined the commentating position alongside Rich Brennen, Corey Graves, and Byron Saxton.  Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 4.53.57 AMHe made it known that in addition to his status as NXT champion, he was also able to do Brennen and Saxton’s jobs better than them.  As Rhyno made his way to the ring, Owens noted that, “I love Rhinos.  I love Rhyno.  I love Rhynos.”

Once the match got underway, Rhyno was able to gain the upperhand and keep Balor static via a massive bearhug.  A possible turnaround in Balor’s favor via dropkicks is killed when Rhyno attacked the ribs, changing the tide once more.  A pele kick afforded Balor the chance to climb the ropes, but instead would be distracted by Kevin Owens’ presence at ringside.  Even a belly-to-belly suplex from Rhyno isn’t enough to take out Balor who his a slingblade and double-footed stomp from the top rope for the win.  Immediately following the 1-2-3, Owens and Balor find themselves in a scuffle, only to be ended with the presence of Samoa Joe.

Winner: Finn Balor
