The 67 year-old announced last month that he would be leaving the Stadium of Light after keeping the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Sunderland picked up 12 points from Advocaat’s nine games in charge which was enough to stave off the threat of relegation.

On May 27th the Dutchman said; “Sunderland has been one of the highlights of my career.”

“At certain moments in your life you have to make a decision and I am almost 68 years old now.

“A number of clubs contacted me but the decision was always Sunderland or nobody.”dick-advocaat

However, he revealed today that the club were persistent and have persuaded him to stay on for a further 12 months.

“The club kept calling,” Advoccat told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “The owner would not let go. So I decided nonetheless to sign a new deal.

“They think I’m still fit enough and personally I also feel that I all still fine. And it’s a wonderful club.”
