Platini asked Blatter to stand down as FIFA president following scandal

FIFA President Sepp Blatter.

Head of UEFA Michel Platini has requested Sepp Blatter steps down as FIFA president.

However, the 79-year old refused and will seek a fifth term as the head of football’s governing body.

Blatter is up against Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein of Jordan in Friday’s election.

Platini’s request came at an emergency meeting organised by Blatter following Wednesday’s arrest of 14 FIFA officials.

The BBC reported Platini addressed Blatter ‘like a friend’ but that he replied by saying it was ‘too late’ to resign.

Platini added that the latest crisis had left him ‘absolutely sickened’ and said ‘people have had enough’.

The African and Asian fotball federations have reiterrated their support for the incumbent, although the Australian federation have announced they will vote for Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein on Friday.

Meanwhile, 50 year-old Platini says he would consider withdrawing the 54 UEFA member nations from the 2018 World Cup should Blatter win tomorrow’s vote.
