Rodgers expects Sterling to stay

Brendan Rodgers says that he expects Raheem Sterling will stay at Liverpool.

The wantaway forward was due to meet Rodgers and club chief executive Ian Ayre on Friday to discuss his future, however the club cancelled the meeting.

Liverpool have been trying to extend Sterling’s current contract, which expires in 2017, however the player and his agent have suggested he will turn down any deal in favour of a move away from Anfield.

Despite saying in an unsanctioned BBC interview last month that he had turned down a $100,000 per week deal to stay at Liverpool, Rodgers praised the 20 year-old’s professionalism.

“Raheem has two years left and I expect him to see that two years through and continue to behave as immaculately as he has done,” the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports.

“I don’t see Raheem being unhappy. Raheem’s representative made it very clear that they wanted to speak at the end of the season, so for us our concentration is really on the last game of the season, so I am sure talks will take place over the course of the summer.”

However, Rodgers did admit that the club wanted to bring an end to talk about Sterling’s future; “We want to resolve the (contract) situation but it doesn’t change my approach to him. There is no problem there.

“Ownership have shown their strength in their time here. When they have had to show that strength with players they have done that.”

Earlier in the week the England international won Liverpool’s Young Player of the Year Award and was booed by some fans as he collected his trophy.
