Palace poop Gerrard’s party

gerrarSteven Gerrard’s last game for Liverpool at Anfield ended in a surprise 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Adam Lallana had put the home side in front before Alan Pardew’s men ruined Gerrard’s fairytale finale.

The defeat means that Champions League football next season is now definitely beyond the Reds, who stay in 5th place in the table.

It was a historic day for Palace as the Eagles scored three goals at Anfield for the first time in their history. Goals from Jason Puncheon, Wilfried Zaha and Glenn Murray ensured Palace completed a league double over the Merseysiders.

But the game merely served as something of a sideshow to Gerrard’s farewell.

The 35 year-old skipper, who will leave the club to join LA Galaxy in the Summer, told; “I’ve been dreading this moment, I will miss it so much. I have loved every minute and I am devastated that I will not play in front of these supporters again.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praised the fans for the farewell they gave the former England captain; “He got a wonderful send off and did everything right until the very end.

“The support he got was brilliant and what they would expect of him; he has been a wonderful player and gave his all for the club.”

At the final whistle, Gerrard was given a guard of honour off the pitch, before reemerging to address the Liverpool fans – virtually all of them had stayed behind to hear from the Liverpool legend.

Former manager Gerard Houllier greeted Gerrard on the pitch as he received a presentation from the club as his 17 year Anfield career drew to a close.

He then took part in a lap of honour with the rest of his team mates and was given a rapturous ovation from the devoted fans who remained to say farewell to an icon of Liverpool Football Club.
