Former Premier League footballer jailed after match-fixing trial

Former Premier League striker Delroy Facey has been jailed for two and a half years for match-fixing. facey

The ex-Bolton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion and Hull City forward was found guilty conspiring to bribe lower league players to fix the results of games.

Judge Mary Stacey said Facey’s offences struck “at the very heart of football”.

Facey, 35, denied any wrong-doing but was jailed along with former non-league player Moses Swabu – a former Crystal Palace trainee – for his part in the conspiracy.

The trial heard Facey urged a footballer at a struggling non-league club to make some “easy money” by fixing the result of a match. The jury were shown a text message sent by Facey to a Hyde FC player toward the end of 2013, offering him $2000 to influence the result of a game.

The National Crime Agency suggested that Facey was involved in a plot to fix a League Two game between AFC Wimbledon and Dagenham and Redbrdge in November 2013.

Krishna Ganeshan and Chann Sankaran, a Singaporean national, were both jailed for five years last June for their part in the conspiracy.

delroyText messages sent from Facey to Ganeshan were shown to the jury at the trial. In October 2013, Ganeshan told Facey to “keep your boys on stand-by”, the court heard. “If they deliver first time, me and only you are in big business for the future.”
Facey claimed he was merely “humouring” two corrupt businessmen who were prepared to pay him $15,000 for his part in the conspiracy and denied any wrong-doing.

However, Facey was found guilty on Wednesday and Judge Stacey told him; “It’s about the fans of the teams involved, the families who follow the fortunes of their teams with passion, loyalty and devotion.

“You have betrayed all that trust, all that confidence, and it’s like a cancer at the heart of football.”
