Off-field controversies no laughing matter for Sterling
- Updated: April 16, 2015

Raheem Sterling found himself in hot water this week after the Liverpool winger was pictured inhaling nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas.
But, pictures also surfaced of the 20 year-old with a shisha pipe, along with team mate Jordan Ibe.
It is reported that Sterling will be ‘reminded of his responsibilities’ by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers at a meeting between the pair on Thursday.
“We want players here who are super-professional and focused on their football – I know he is,” Rodgers told the BBC.
“It’s not just on the field, it’s off the field as well but I will speak with him on it and we’ll move on.”
However, the club, who haven’t commented on the photos, have suggested that the player won’t be fined for either incident.
Earlier this month, Sterling admitted that he turned down a contract offer of $100,000 per week during an interview on BBC television, which he conducted without prior knowledge of the football club.
The off the field indiscretions didn’t seem to have an affect on the England international Monday night, as he scored as Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 at Anfield.
“Young players make mistakes. As long as they learn from them, that is what is important,” Rodgers added.
Surely, Sterling’s off-field troubles will lessen his bargaining position when contract negotiations with Liverpool are reopened.
