2 #1’s each get 5

Cory Kluber and Yordano Ventura are both a few million dollars richer and have new 5 year deals with their prospective clubs.

Corey Kluber

“Corey was really upfront,” Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. “He said, ‘This is where I want to be. I want to be in Cleveland for a long time. Ideally, I’d like it to be a lifetime contract.” He will have to settle for a new 5 year deal. On the eve of Opening Day for the Indians, the club announced that it had signed Kluber to a five-year contract that includes team options for the 2020 and ’21 seasons. With a guaranteed base value of $38.5 million, the deal is the richest for a pre-arbitration pitcher in Major League history. It also has the potential to keep Kluber in a Cleveland uniform through his 35th birthday. The American League’s reigning Cy Young Award winner can earn a maximum of $77 million over the life of the contract, which includes a $1 million signing bonus, performance escalators and a number of provisions to account for potential trade scenarios. Kluber’s 2015 salary increases to $1 million after he signed a one-year, $601,000 pre-arbitration deal during Spring Training.kluber&Tito

“I’m excited to have it in place and be a Cleveland Indian for a long time,” Kluber said on Sunday. “More than anything, I wanted to be here. The young core that Chris has done a great job of locking up, and everything that [manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Mickey Callaway] have meant to me since I’ve gotten here, that had more to do with it than anything. I wanted to be a part of this.”

Kluber had 1 thing going for him, and 1 thing going against him. He was the 2015 American League Cy Young award winner. But he will also be 29 on Friday. Looking at everything, Cleveland decided it was worth the risk and both he and the organization are happy with the results.

Yordano Ventura

yvAccording to a source, Ventura will earn $750,000 in 2015, $1 million in ’16, $3.25 million in ’17, $6.25 million in ’18 and $9.75 million in ’19. There was also a $1 million signing bonus. The contract would give the Royals club control through 2021. The two years of club options are for $12 million each, per a source. There is also a $1 million buyout for the club on the option.

“Good for him. He deserves it so much,” catcher Salvador Perez said. “Can’t wait to keep catching him because he’s a good one.”

“I feel really happy because I like to see the development of this staff. We want to win together,” right-hander Edinson Volquez said.

Last year Ventura, 23, had a 3.20 ERA and was 14-10. This is just another example of the Royals trying to lock up their young talent, much like they did the afore mentioned Salvador Perez to a 5 year $7 million dollar contract as he is under club control until 2019 with the options the club has.
