Pre-Season Preview; The Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians are coming off an 85-77 record, eliminated from the Wild Card picture at the end of the season. They have a lot to prove this year so that doesn’t happen again.

The reigning AL Cy Young award winner, Corey Kluber is back and the pitching staff is loaded with young talent who could emerge as top starters. That includes Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer and Danny Salazar. Veteran Gavin Floyd could also help if he is health and emerging closer, Cody Allen is also part of the mix. Talented arms and a solid bullpen. Jose Ramirez immediately improved a bad defense last season. Behind him, the team has top prospect Francisco Lindor with another shortstop in Erik Gonzalez. Jason Kipnis is expected to be ready for the season opener on April 6th, which is a positive for the Indians.

The injury list is high. Nick Swisher (knees), Michael Bourn (hamstring), Jason Kipnis (oblique, hamstring, finger), Ryan Raburn (knee, wrist), and newcomer Brandon Moss who is coming off right hip surgery. If these injured hitters can return healthy and ready to go, they can do some damage with a bat. Last season the Indians led the league in errors so they will need to revamp their defense.

2015 Prediction
The White Sox and Twins spent this off-season making a lot of free-agent signings, while the Indians’ only big additions were Brandon Moss and Gavin Floyd, who are both coming off injuries. The Tigers won their fourth straight division title and the Royals made it all the way to the World Series. It will be very interesting to see how Cleveland does against all the talent in their division. They have a strong pitching muscle, but will that be enough to get the job done? I see them placing 4th in the AL central.
