Chicago Cubs to honor Ernie Banks
- Updated: February 20, 2015

The Chicago Cubs announced they will honor the late Ernie Banks throughout spring training and the entire 2015 season. The team will wear a number 14 patch on their home and away jerseys and also wear number 14 hats during split-squad spring training games on March 5th. Opening day, April 5th, when they play the Cardinals each fan will receive a pin honoring Ernie. Also, during the game the Chicago Cubs will pay tribute to Banks’ life and career. “There is no level of recognition that can properly acknowledge how much Ernie Banks meant to this franchise and fan base,” Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement. “Collectively, we must ensure Mr. Cub’s legacy rightfully lives on at the Friendly Confines and with future generations of baseball fans.” Ernie Banks died on January 23rd from a heart attack. He was with the team from 1953-1971, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977 and won two MVP awards.
