A-Rod A-gain

I want to start this article off by saying I am neither a Yankee fan nor an A-Rod fan. I am a baseball fan, and both the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez are tarnishing baseball. So, the fact that the two of them have now ended up together makes me laugh.

The Yankees don’t want A-Rod and for A-Rod the feeling seems mutual. I, for one, can not remember another more volatile relationship between a team and a player on that very team like this relationship. A-Rod, until recently, actually had a lawsuit pending against the Yankee’s team doctor in which he suggested that there was a conspiracy between that doctor and the Yankees to keep him off the field.

The Yankees sent a clear signal by signing Chase Headley to a 4 year $52 million dollar contract this off-season. Despite the fact that over the last 3 seasons even with A-Rod being hampered by injuries and playing only 277 total games in those three seasons A-Rod still had an OPS+(OPS+ adjusts for league and park effects, when looking at a players on-base plus slugging percentage.) of 115. Headley, who just received that big 4 year contract based on his 2014 campaign where he spent the final 58 games in Yankee pinstripes had an OPS+ of only 102 (A 100 OPS+ is league average, and each point up or down is one percentage  point above or below league average). A-Rod does turn 40 in July and has not played in a major league game since September 25th 2013. But Yankee General Manager Brian Cashman was very clear when defining the role of Chase Headley, saying that Chase was the starting 3rd baseman for the New York Yankees. Where does that leave A-Rod?

No one knows what to expect from A-Rod on the field or in the media. No one knows if he can still hit, or still field, or if he is still clean for that matter. No one knows how his teammates or opposing teammates are going to react to him. arodfieldNo one knows how his manager or opposing managers are going to react to him. If you wore Yankee pinstripes, how would you react to him? If you were the opposing manager, would you instruct your starting pitcher to drill him in his first at bat on opening day just for spite?

What about the fans? How will they react? If you were at Spring Training, and your kid had a baseball and a sharpie waiting with excitement for any ball player to sign his baseball and A-Rod grabbed his sharpie and his baseball to sign it. Would you stop A-Rod from signing your son’s ball? You don’t like him, but his signature is worth money. Now you are in the same boat as the Yankees.

Just wait until A-Rod hits his 6th home run of the season. That will give him 660 for his career, the same number as Willie Mays. That also triggers a clause in his contract for a $6 million dollar bonus. That same bonus happens every time he ties a major league player as he climbs the ladder of most home runs all-time in a career. So at 714 when he ties Babe Ruth he gets $6 million more. At 755 when he ties Hank Aaron he will get another $6 million dollar bonus. Then at 762, when he ties Barry Bonds for the most home runs of all time in MLB. Multiple published reports have said that A-Rod worked out with Bonds during the off-season and he supposedly told him that he was going to be the new home run king.

I think this is very interesting. I do not think A-Rod will ever play another regular season baseball game ever. Here is why. If you were A-Rod and you practiced with Barry Bonds in the off-season, and people were skeptical as to if you could even hit a baseball never-mind one over the fence. Wouldn’t you have that on tape? You hitting bombs along side Barry Bonds. I would, and because he does not, that leads me to believe that he can not do it anymore.

A-Rod once said, “I have to defend myself. If I don’t defend myself, no one else will.” That is not it, he is simply running out of people who are willing to lie for him, including the Yankees.
