Favorite February Four-word Phrases

Finally the American Football Season has ended. I am not an American Football hater, in fact quite the opposite, but I do prefer the college version to the professional game. However, I am about my sports as I am the weather. I like the different seasons, especially the warmer weather seasons.

I know for my fellow Cleat Geek, Charlie Ellis, the original Football Season is only about to begin, but does it really ever end? Maybe Charlie will answer that one for me later on.

I am always excited this time of year when February comes on the calendar and the Super Bowl is complete. Aw, February how I have missed you. You are the shortest and sweetest month of the year.

I have a few four-word phrases that I think describe February the best. For some they will be a surprise, for others a stretch, but those of you who think like me I believe they will be familiar and hopefully make you smile, maybe even reminisce.

One four-word phrase that I enjoy hearing in February is, ‘March Madness Is Coming.’
(Not to be confused with the chant of the great American Revolutionary War patriot Paul Revere, ‘The British Are Coming,’ but a four-word phrase nonetheless.)marchmadness

For the college basketball loving faithful around the country, those are dear and precious words especially for the currently number one ranked, ‘University of Kentucky Wildcats’ and ‘The Big Blue Nation.’

At the University of Kentucky, basketball seasons are not determined to be successful simply based on the current win-loss record. Success in men’s basketball at the University of Kentucky is based on winning the national championship. You do not become the winningest program (2161 and counting) in college basketball history by thinking any other way. ‘CATS Strive for Nine’!

Another four-word phrase that makes me happy is, ‘Drivers. Start. Your. Engines!’
(I remember when it was ‘Gentlemen. Start. Your. Engines!’ however the welcome addition of ladies and specifically Danica Patrick to the sport have required a change.)daytona

In the NASCAR realm, February is the biggest month of the year. Each year NASCAR begins the new season in February. It is also the only sport in the world that starts the season with its version of the ‘Super Bowl’, the Daytona 500, on February 22, 2015. The ‘Granddaddy of them All’, kicks-off the ‘Race for the Chase,’ as over 50 drivers will strive to become the next ‘NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion.’

It is the excitement of the speed and exhilaration, the fresh start on the 2.5-mile super-speedway watching the colorful cars race at speeds of 200 miles per hour and then some. It is the ‘smell of burnt rubber.’ It is the ‘roar of the crowd.’ It is the ‘thunder of the engines.’ It is the coordination and syncopation of the ‘Over The Wall Gang.’

It is the strategy of a championship chess match paired with the grace and elegance of a ballet. Of course there are those times when the dancers crash into the wall and one another that invigorate the spectators as well. It is the ‘57th Annual Daytona 500!’

The February four-word phrase that I love to hear more than any other is, ‘Pitchers and Catchers Report!’st1

Those words to me are as precious as any in sports. They make me as happy as the phrase, ‘Last out of Season’ make me sad. I can hardly wait each year from the last pitch of the last game of the season to the beginning of spring training.

Spring Training is the first sign of the new beginnings for the greatest game ever developed. It brings hope to even the lowest fans that their team will have a shot this year. It means that warmer weather must be on the way because, ‘The Boys of Summer’ are getting ready to play ball.

The ‘Crack of the Bat,’ the ‘Smack of the Gloves,’ the ‘Cleats in the Dirt,’ the ‘Humming of a Fastball,’ the ‘Smell of the Hotdogs,’ the ‘Thud of Touching Base,’ the shouts of ‘Get Your Cold Hudepohl,’ or ‘Peanuts, Popcorn, Cracker Jacks,’ are just a few of my favorite four-word phrases of February and all season long. The old MLB marketing slogan, ‘Baseball Fever Catch It’ has changed for me to, ‘Baseball Fever Caught it.’ I Love This Game!

I have one favorite seven-word phrase for the entire Major League Baseball Season, courtesy of the Ford C. Frick Award-winning Broadcaster and Voice of the Cincinnati Reds, the great Marty Brennamen, ‘And This One Belongs to the REDS!’

I have two last favorite February Four-word Phrases and they are not even sports realted but very special and more important:

‘Happy Valentine’s Day Sweetheart,’ and ‘Happy Birthday My Lovely,’ which are both reserved for my beautiful bride who graciously puts up with, and even some times enables, my sports addiction. I love you.
