Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic has joined Schalke 04 on loan until the end of the season. The German club has the option to sign the 21 year-old permanently at the end of the loan spell.

The Serbia international’s last appearance for City came back in August, in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

Nastasic was signed by former manager Roberto Mancini and was a regular starter at centre-back under the Italian, but has found first-team opportunities under new manager, Manuel Pellegrini, hard to come by.

Pellegrini signed Martin Demichelis in September 2013, having coached him at Malaga and River Plate in the past. At the start of this season, Eliaquim Mangala was brought for £32 million from FC Porto, and these signings have kept Nastasic out of the team.

Nastasic played down rumours of a rift between himself and Pellegrini, insisting that the move is to gain more first team football.
