Twice is Enough

In 2010 the Seattle Seahawks finished with a record of 7-8-1 in the regular season. This obviously under .500 record was good enough to win the NFC West and allowed them to host a play-off game. At that time they played their home game against the then defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints, and won. This year it happened again, the Carolina Panthers with a 7-8-1 regular season record hosted a wild card play-off game and defeated a depleted Arizona Cardinal team by a final of 27-16. They were able to do this in front of a ruckus crowd in Carolina even-though the Arizona Cardinals won 4 more games than they did in the regular season.

The Carolina Panther’s finished the regular season with a record of 7-8-1, and 19 other teams had a better record than they did, yet were not allowed to participate in the play-offs. All 4 NFC South teams had a negative run differential. Believe it or not, by week 17 of the season, the Panthers were 22nd in the league in points allowed, yet they were 1st in their division. As a whole, the NFC South played the AFC North as it’s inter-conference partner. Now, just so you get a good picture, the Falcons, Panther’s, Saints and Buccaneers, played the AFC North or the following teams; the Ravens, Steelers, Bengals and Browns. In head-to-head match-ups, the NFC South lost with a total record of 3-12-1. The whole division was terrible, and a case could be made where none of them could or should even be in the play-offs.

I have heard and read where people do not think a team should be allowed in the play-offs with a loosing record. Personally, I would not go that far, but I do believe a team with a below .500 record should not receive the privilege of hosting a play-off game. In my perspective, if you can not win more games than you loose, then you deserve to travel somewhere else to try to advance in the play-offs. I believe the NFL needs to strongly look at this rule, and give  great consider weather to change the rule or not. Twice is enough, don’t let it happen a 3rd time.
