Wide Eyes in the Windy City

So everyone is abuzz because the two clubs in the windy city are signing and spending. Today the Cubs made the Jon Lester signing official with a press conference with the Chicago White Sox are rumored to have signed Melky Cabrera to a 3 year $42 million dollar contract.

The White Sox have signed reliever Zach Duke, 1st baseman Adam LaRoche, closer David Robertson and traded for starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija. While the Cubs have countered with a new manager in Joe Maddon, then they signed pitcher Jason Hammel, traded for former Arizona Diamondback catcher Miguel Montero and signed the a fore mentioned Jon Lester for 6 years and $155 million. It has now also be confirmed that the Cubs have signed former St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte. He gets a $4.5 million guarentee and as much as $2.5 million more in performance incentives.

But everyone needs to calm down. These 2 teams finished with identical 73-89 records last year and both finished 17 games back of the division winners. The Cubs gave up 93 more runs than they scored and the White Sox had a run differential of -98. They would each need to improve by 15 games next season to even be a wild card team. So, as the old saying goes, don’t put the cart before the horse.

Between the 2 teams they have 1 championship since World War I. These 2 teams should be spending money and signing players. Maybe, just maybe one of these two teams will actually be competitive in 2015.
