Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has signed a contract to become a UFC fighter. The contract was finalized on October 22nd, but was announced during the UFC 181 pay-per-view.

UFC President Dana White confirmed that Punk is looking to fight at middleweight (185 pounds) but said he’s open to 170 pounds also.White said it could take six or seven months before Punk steps inside The Octagon. White said: “He wanted to fight here. He wanted to give it a shot, so we gave him an opportunity. It’s not like Brock Lesnar. We’re not going to throw the kitchen sink at him. Lesnar had a wrestling background. (CM Punk) is going to fight a guy who is 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 — something like that. He’s been coming to fights for a long time and after his WWE contract was up, he called me and said he wanted to give it a shot. I said, ‘All right. We’ll give you a shot.’”

For his part Punk appeared on the FOX Sports 1 UFC 181 post-show tonight. Punk talked with Ariel Helwani about signing with the company. Regarding people saying he doesn’t deserve to be in the Octagon because of his record, Punk says he understands that opinion and it’s hos job to change people’s minds. He says that won’t be one of his hang-ups and he’s not going to deal with negativity. Punk says there needs to be fighters that call him out but he hopes someone can be more creative than the “fake wrestler” diss.

Then via twitter Jon “Bones” Jones had a little fun saying he was going to headline Wrestle-Mania this year. I wonder how many other fighters will react to UFC signing a fake wrestler like Punk and how many of them will call him out in the next few days. Punk has a huge following but at 36 and complaining about WWE making him work hurt I just can’t see this being a good move for Punk or the UFC.
